Walk-on Rooflights

The detail that matters

We supply and install structurally calculated walk-on units — laminated, load-rated and slip-managed — for terraces, courtyards, basement lightwells and roof gardens.

Walk-on glass is engineering, not just thicker glazing. Each unit is built around a laminated structural top pane — commonly two or three toughened leaves bonded with structural interlayers — calculated for the span and the loading class: domestic foot traffic, or higher ratings for planters and furniture. Anti-slip options range from discreet ceramic fritting to full sandblasted bands. Frames sit flush in the terrace finish on a load-bearing kerb, with drainage detailed around the perimeter. Below, the unit reads as a flush glass ceiling panel; above, as a clean inset in the deck. Basement lightwells and pavement-level panels use the same engineering at higher load classes.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is a walk-on rooflight?

Each unit is structurally calculated for its size and use — domestic units are rated for foot traffic with generous safety factors, and higher load classes cover planters, furniture and pavement-level duty. Strength is engineered per panel, not assumed.

Are walk-on rooflights slippery when wet?

Untreated glass can be, so we offer anti-slip finishes: a near-invisible ceramic frit pattern for light use, or sandblasted bands where the panel sits in a main walking route.

Can a walk-on rooflight go in my roof terrace?

That's the classic application — a flush glass panel set into the terrace deck, lighting the room beneath. The kerb takes the load and the perimeter drains with the rest of the terrace.

Do walk-on units lose much light versus normal rooflights?

Slightly — the thicker laminated build and any anti-slip finish reduce transmission a little. Below a panel in open sky, the difference rarely registers in practice.

How much do walk-on rooflights cost compared to standard?

Meaningfully more — structural laminated glass and engineering calculations drive the price. As a guide, expect two to three times an equivalent fixed flat rooflight; we quote each panel from its size and load class.
