We survey the existing kerb or ring beam, check it's sound and square, and either size the new lantern to it exactly or specify adapter sections where the old footprint doesn't match modern systems. Polycarbonate domes, glass pyramid rooflights, timber lanterns past saving and early aluminium units with failed seals are the usual candidates. The thermal jump is dramatic — from effectively uninsulated to current Building-Regulation performance — and because the structural opening already exists, most swaps complete in a day with no internal redecoration beyond the reveal.
