Opening & Vented Roof Lanterns — Supplied & Installed

Hot air rises — which makes the top of a lantern the single best ventilation point in the room. Opening lanterns put an electric vent exactly there, purging summer heat and cooking steam at the press of a button.

Opening & Vented Roof Lanterns

The detail that matters

We supply lanterns with integrated electric opening panes, rain sensors, thermostatic control and remote or app operation, plus retrofit vent options for some existing systems.

An opening lantern builds one or more actuated panes into the roof slope: chain or linear actuators drive the sash, concealed wiring runs through the frame to a control point, and a rain sensor closes everything automatically when the weather turns. Control ranges from a simple wall switch to thermostatic automation that vents the room above a set temperature — genuinely useful over kitchens and in south-facing garden rooms. Vents are factory-built into the lantern, so the decision belongs at ordering time; retrofitting is possible only on certain systems, which we'll confirm from photos.

Frequently asked questions

Are opening roof lanterns worth it?

Over kitchens and in south-facing rooms, emphatically yes — venting at the highest point purges heat and steam faster than any window can. In cooler, well-ventilated rooms a fixed lantern plus good doors often suffices.

What happens if it rains while the vent is open?

The rain sensor closes it automatically — it's a standard part of the package, not an optional extra, so an open vent and a surprise shower never meet.

Can opening vents be added to my existing lantern?

Only on certain systems — vents are normally factory-built into the roof slope. Send photos of your lantern and we'll confirm whether a retrofit sash exists for it or whether replacement is the honest answer.

How are opening lanterns controlled?

Your choice: a simple wall switch, a remote, app control, or full automation that opens on temperature and closes on rain. Most kitchens land on switch-plus-rain-sensor.

Does an opening pane compromise the lantern's weather seal?

Not in a quality system — the sash closes onto continuous gaskets and locks down tight. The vent panes carry the same glazing spec and guarantee as the fixed glass around them.
